Time of the twins
Overview
Time of the Twins is the first book in the Dragonlance Legends trilogy, set after the events of Dragons of Spring Dawning. It focuses heavily on the twin brothers Caramon and Raistlin Majere, exploring time travel, ambition, and the dangerous lure of power.
⚔️ Opening Situation
After the War of the Lance:
Caramon Majere is physically strong but emotionally broken—drinking heavily and living in self-pity.
Raistlin Majere, now a powerful mage in the Tower of High Sorcery, has grown cold, distant, and obsessed with gaining ultimate power.
Raistlin reveals his plan:
➡️ He intends to challenge and overthrow the goddess Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness.
To do this, he needs to travel back in time.
⏳ The Time Travel Mission
Raistlin recruits:
Caramon (reluctantly)
Crysania, a devout cleric of Paladine
They use a magical device to travel back to the time just before the Cataclysm, a world-altering disaster in Krynn’s history.
๐️ Istar Before the Fall
They arrive in the ancient city of Istar, once the greatest civilization on Krynn.
Key points:
The Kingpriest of Istar is fanatically devoted to “good,” but his extremism has made him tyrannical.
Society is corrupt beneath a surface of righteousness.
This period leads directly to the Cataclysm, when the gods punish the world.
Raistlin plans to exploit this moment of chaos to gain entry into the Abyss and confront Takhisis.
๐ง Raistlin’s Manipulations
Raistlin is at his most cunning here:
He manipulates Crysania, gaining her trust and emotional attachment.
Though she believes she can redeem him, he uses her faith and power for his own ends.
His physical weakness hides his immense magical strength and ruthless ambition.
๐ Caramon’s Struggle
Caramon undergoes major development:
He sees how far Raistlin has fallen.
He begins to realize his own dependency and lack of purpose.
His journey becomes one of reclaiming strength—not just physically, but emotionally and morally.
๐ฅ Enter Tasslehoff and the Future Twist
Tasslehoff Burrfoot (the kender) plays a key role:
He becomes involved in time travel through magical devices.
His presence introduces paradoxes and alternate timelines.
The group begins to glimpse a dark future:
A timeline where Raistlin succeeds…
And the world is left dead and empty as a result.
๐ Journey Toward the Abyss
The climax builds as:
Raistlin prepares to enter the Abyss to face Takhisis.
Crysania insists on accompanying him, believing she can guide him toward good.
Caramon and Tasslehoff begin to understand the catastrophic consequences if Raistlin wins.
⚡ Themes
Power vs. Humanity: Raistlin’s quest for godhood costs him his soul.
Faith and Blind Devotion: Crysania’s belief in Raistlin blinds her to danger.
Brotherhood: The emotional core is the tragic bond between Caramon and Raistlin.
Time and Consequences: Actions ripple across timelines, showing devastating possibilities.
๐งฉ Ending (Setup for Next Book)
The book ends on a tense note:
Raistlin is on the brink of entering the Abyss.
The stakes are clear: if he succeeds, he may doom all of Krynn.
Caramon must decide whether to stand by his brother—or stop him.
๐ In Short
Time of the Twins is darker and more character-driven than the original Chronicles trilogy. It shifts from epic war to psychological conflict, especially focusing on Raistlin’s transformation into one of fantasy’s most complex antiheroes.
