Dragons of Winter Night

This is the second book in the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy, continuing directly after Dragons of Autumn Twilight. The story follows the Companions as the War of the Lance escalates and the forces of the Dragon Highlords gain strength.

The tone is darker and more tragic, with major character losses, internal conflict, and the growing threat of evil dragons.

Part I: The Struggle for Pax Tharkas

The story opens with the Companions helping refugees flee the fortress of Pax Tharkas.

Tanis Half-Elven leads the group amid growing tension.

Sturm Brightblade embodies honor and duty.

Caramon Majere and Raistlin Majere continue their contrasting paths—strength vs. ambition.

Laurana Kanan begins her transformation from sheltered noblewoman into a leader.

The group faces attacks from dragonarmies, including blue dragons under the command of Highlord Kitiara.

They successfully escape with refugees, but tensions rise—especially around Tanis’s feelings for Laurana and Kitiara.

Part II: Journey to Tarsis and Separation

The Companions split up, each following different missions:

Tanis, Caramon, and Raistlin

They travel toward the city of Tarsis, hoping to find ships to aid the resistance. Instead, they discover:

Tarsis is landlocked (contrary to legend)

The city is under threat from dragonarmies

They reunite with:

Alhana Starbreeze, a Silvanesti elf princess seeking help.

Laurana, Sturm, Flint, and Tasslehoff

This group encounters increasing danger and hardship:

Tasslehoff Burrfoot provides moments of humor

Flint Fireforge shows age and weariness

They eventually head toward Solamnia, hoping to rally the Knights.

Part III: The Dragon Orb and Icewall

Tanis’s Group → Icewall Castle

Tanis and companions pursue a dragon orb, a powerful magical artifact.

They encounter:

Fizban, the eccentric wizard (hinted to be more than he seems)

The brutal Icewall region and its dangers

At Icewall Castle:

They find the orb but face intense peril

They encounter the white dragon Sleet

Laurana’s Rise

Meanwhile, Laurana’s storyline becomes central:

She reaches the Knights of Solamnia

Initially dismissed due to her youth and gender

Gradually earns respect through courage and leadership

She begins to emerge as a key figure in the resistance.

Part IV: The High Clerist’s Tower

This is the emotional and strategic climax.

Laurana leads forces to defend the High Clerist’s Tower, a critical stronghold against dragonarmies.

Key events:

The dragonarmies launch a massive assault using dragons and flying citadels

The defenders are outnumbered and nearly overwhelmed

Sturm’s Sacrifice

Sturm Brightblade dies defending the tower

His death restores honor to the Knights of Solamnia

Becomes a symbol of true knighthood and sacrifice

Part V: The Dragon Orb’s Power

Tanis’s group arrives with the dragon orb:

The dragonarmies are forced to retreat

However:
